About FASE23
For this year’s FASE23, BA Film and Screen Studies third year students present the following screening events, offering a space for audiences to reflect on contemporary concerns and immerse themselves in expanded cinematic worlds.
Our opening event Haphazard Inn: Chaos Narratives (24/01/2023) is a screening event of non-conforming, psychedelic, and surrealist animations, music videos and archival films from the past 50 years. In its search for meaning within the chaotic, this screening programme will invite you to embark on a thought-provoking trip filled with bizarre, idiosyncratic, and comedic narratives – expect the unexpected.
The centrepiece event Bridge of the World, Heart of the Universe (31/01/2023) is a mixed media moving-image showcase. The event centres themes of migration and culture, promoting a space for connection rather than assimilation. Alongside the exhibition and screening there will be free a zine-making workshop and a chance to sample food from around the world.
To close FASE23 Live, Laugh, Lesbian (03/02/2023) invites the audience on a tongue-in-cheek voyage through lesbian representation. The program comprises a playful mix of archive and contemporary films with contrasting perspectives. A Comedy in 6 Unnatural Acts by Jan Oxenberg (1975) looks at Hollywood depictions of lesbians and exaggerates them to mock them.
Bathroom Gender by Carol Ashley & Kathy Clark (1989) explores what it means to perform masculinity as a young girl and how that is received by the people around them.
A Short Film About Us by Ramses Underhill-Smith (1996) poses questions about dating people from other cultures and the issues encountered within these relationships.
Dyke Blend by Eva Weber (1996) is a parody of the stereotypes of lesbian dating.
My Mother’s Girlfriend by Arun Fulara (2021) is a heart-warming exploration of a lesbian relationship through the eyes of a son who discovers that his mother is with another woman.
NAILS by Pippa McCormick (2021) is a short film about how to identify other lesbians and how being wrong can actually work out for the best.
